Tax Season is Here – Department of Taxation & Finance Encouraging NYer’s to Use Direct File Program
Tax season has finally arrived and the New York State Department of Taxation & Finance is again encouraging New Yorkers to use the Direct File program to electronically file their federal and state tax returns. The Department of Taxation & Finance says last year’s pilot program was deemed a success with the IRS and NYS expanding Direct File eligibility. The expanded eligibility will now allow additional taxpayers to file their 2024 federal and state personal income tax returns for free.
“The Tax Department is excited to expand the Direct File program to provide simple and free tax filing to New Yorkers,” said New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “The program expansion covers more tax credits and different types of income. Check your eligibility to see if Direct File is right for you.”
Taxpayers who have basic tax returns have the opportunity to use Direct File with one or two main sources of wages claiming the most common deductions and credits. Residents in the state who had 2024 wages up to $200,000 or $250,000 for a joint filing may qualify for the program.
Access to Direct File may be done from a smartphone, laptop, tablet or computer. It is also available in English and in Spanish. The Department of Taxation and Finance says the average taxpayer in the state may save around $260 in tax preparation fees by using the free service.
