Tax Day is less than two weeks away now. All Federal and State income tax returns must be filed by Monday, April 15th to avoid a penalty. For residents who have yet to file their taxes, a new program is available that was developed by the state and IRS which will allow New Yorker’s to e-file their federal and state personal income tax returns for free.
The program, titled Direct File, is a pilot program that is open for residents within the state who meet a certain type of income and claiming certain credits and adjustments, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance said in a release.

“Many New Yorkers are eligible to electronically prepare and file their taxes online using brand-name software through Free File,” said New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “As the April 15 tax filing deadline approaches, we encourage eligible taxpayers to take advantage of this free software to quickly and easily e-file their tax returns.”
