Cortland County did pass a local law raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21.
Legislators mistakenly believed passing a local law needed a 2/3-majority of the weighted vote.
Lawmakers learned a simple majority was all that was needed, and there were enough votes for approval.
The announcement came at the end of a special meeting of the Cortland County legislature Thursday morning.
The meeting was scheduled to hold public hearings and votes on budgets for Tompkins Cortland Community College. (Approved)
So, as of October 1, you’ll need to be 21 years old to buy alcohol and tobacco in Cortland County.
