A kayaker had to be rescued from the Tioughnioga River yesterday.

Cortlandville Fire Department was dispatched at about 3:45 pm.

The male became stranded on an “island” in the river, located between Bacon Road and Blodgett Mills Road. He was uninjured, but surrounded by high currents and elevated water levels.

Firefighters made visual contact with him approximately 60ft offshore, immediately requesting the City of Cortland Swift Water Rescue Team.

Crews arrived and deployed watercraft at the Blodgett Mills boat launch.

They proceeded upstream and rescued the kayaker, who was taken back downstream to the boat launch and evaluated by TLC.

All personnel were clear of the scene just before 5 pm.

New York State Police also assisted with the rescue.
