SUNY Upstate Awarded Grant To Research Experimental ‘Heroin Vaccine’

Local News

SUNY Upstate Medical University has been awarded a research grant to further explore a new experimental heroin vaccine.

According to the U.S. Military HIV Research Program, the vaccine “induced antibodies” that prevented heroin from entering the brain from the blood stream in mice and rats.

Researchers say the blocking was effective in these test animals for a period of up to three months.

The vaccine aims to eventually block the euphoria and addictive effects of heroin and other commonly misused opioids.
