SUNY Cortland’s WSUC 90.5 FM Marks 50 years On Air

SUNY Cortland’s student-run radio station, WSUC 90.5 FM The Dragon, will celebrate five decades on the air today, Friday, Oct. 2, with a day of special programming, alumni appearances and events highlighting the station’s history.

The celebration, held in conjunction with National College Radio Day, will give current students an opportunity to learn more about WSUC and connect with former members of the station.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., WSUC will broadcast special programming from the Penny Seltzman Springer ’74 Radio Studio in Room C103 of Cornish-Van Hoesen Hall. The broadcast will include guest alumni DJs and appearances from other station alumni. Listeners can tune in at 90.5 FM or access the station’s online audio stream.

The anniversary celebration will continue with a reception from noon to 1 p.m. in the Cornish-Van Hoesen Hall C-Wing. An alumni panel will follow from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Cinema Screening Room.

Panelists include Emily Cittadino Hansen ’08, a professional learning facilitator at Integrated Community Alternatives Network, and Lisa Baumgartner ’09, senior territory manager for immunology and dermatology at Eli Lilly. Rob Galm ’17, a content producer for ESPN, and a former X101 High School Football Play-By-Play Announcer, will also contribute a message to the panel.

Friday’s events are part of a larger celebration of WSUC’s 50th anniversary. The station’s alumni gathered in July during Alumni Reunion for an event hosted by Michael Flaster ’78, WSUC’s first station manager. The reunion highlighted the station’s history, including its evolution from WCSU-AM to WSUC-FM.

The anniversary comes as SUNY Cortland’s communication facilities underwent a major transformation. Cornish-Van Hoesen Hall’s C-Wing completed a multiyear, $27 million renovation in January, providing new facilities for the Communication and Media Studies Department, including the state-of-the-art Springer Radio Studio.

For current students and alumni, the 50th anniversary offers an opportunity to look back at five decades of student broadcasting while celebrating the role WSUC continues to play on campus.
