SUNY Cortland’s The Big Event Returns to Cortland In April

SUNY Cortland says those in the Cortland community can now request students at the college to volunteer for a day of service during The Big Event on Sunday, April 19. Organized by the college’s Student Government Association (SGA), the annual communitywide service project has hundreds of students volunteer for an entire day to help with spring cleaning in the Cortland community.

Projects may include post-winter raking, painting or general care. SUNY Cortland says more job sites are still needed to host students involved. Those in the community, non-profits or local groups seeking assistance with outdoor chores may reach out to the SGA via email at SGA@Cortland.edu or complete a form online HERE.

All jobsite requests are due by Friday, March 27, and private residences must be located within one mile of campus.

“Hundreds of university volunteers, including members of Greek organizations, student clubs, athletic teams and club sports, will lend a hand and complete projects throughout the local area. Student volunteers can be expected to arrive at approximately 10 a.m. on April 19.” SUNY Cortland said in a release.

The government association will look to supply basic tools for student volunteers to help rake, clean up debris and garden, but jobsites are asked to provide supplies for more specific tasks such as painting they say.

The Big Event first began back in 2015 by student efforts, the college says, and is now coordinated by the SGA as its largest annual initiative.
