This summer, SUNY Cortland will be hosting around 300 young scientists from all over the state who will be competing in solving environmental problems. The school will be the new host of the New York State Envirothon.

SUNY Cortland says about 50 teams are expected to be on campus from May 22nd to May 23rd, the event is sponsored by the New York State Soil and Water Conservation District with winners going on to compete in the National Conservation Foundation Envirothon.

“I hope that they (competitors) see that ’there’s other people of the same mind and that they learn — whether they go into an environmental field or not — about their environment and how they can protect it for the future,”

Said Blanche Hurlbutt, chair of the New York State Envirothon Committee.

The school says the very first Envirothon began back in 1979 in Pennsylvania under the old name of Environmental Olympics and was designed as a competition for high school students to gain interest in natural resource conservation and other environmental issues. New York joined in 1990.

A reason why SUNY Cortland was selected as the new host for the New York State Envirothon was cited for Cortland’s central location in the state, school facilities and access to test sites with the required varied environments needed for the competition.

Animal pelts, soil pits and streams and plants will be just some of the items the young scientists will be using during the competition with problem-solving and leadership skills being key components for teams to be successful in the competition.

“They’re doing hands-on stuff that they probably have already learned within class, and they’re experiencing it out in the field and seeing it firsthand,”

Hurlbutt continued in a release by the school.

The event will include a guest speaker, Executive Director of Empire State Forest Product Association, John Barrow. There will also be an ice cream social, movie and outdoor activities and basketball.
