SUNY Cortland “Big Event” Taking Place on April 21st

SUNY Cortland’s annual Big Event will be taking place on Sunday, April 21st, the College has announced. The Big Event is a student-run, community wide event where volunteers (mostly students from SUNY Cortland) participate for 5 hours helping the Cortland Community.

The annual Big Event, which began in 2015 by Ashlee Prewitt, is now organized by SUNY Cortland’s Student Government Association. The day has hundreds of students volunteering to help the Cortland Community with cleaning, raking leaves, painting or any other type of spruce up for the area.

“It’s just a great way for us to match students with community projects and kind of get them out there so SUNY Cortland is involved with the community,” said Gallagher, who is co-organizing the event with SGA President Joe Mascetta in a release. “We’re not two separate things. There isn’t just SUNY Cortland. Or the City of Cortland. Or Cortland county. It’s all one thing.”

Last year’s event had over 400 participants and 40 separate projects were accomplished. The volunteer work will begin at 9am and continue until about 3 in the afternoon.

SUNY Cortland says residents and/or organizations who have a need may sign-up to be added to the list of job sites. Sign-up may be done online or by contacting the SGA Office at 607-753-4816.
