SUNY Cortland Auxiliary Reuses, Recycles Nearly 30 Tons of Food Waste

SUNY Cortland Auxiliary Services, which operates dining operations on the SUNY Cortland campus, took action to reuse and recycle nearly 30 tons of food waste last year.

That’s the equivalent of nearly 63,800 pounds of uneaten food kept out of Cortland County’s landfill. The Cortland Auxiliary accomplished this through various steps including increasing the amount of scrap food composted by a third and more than tripling donations of unused food to local pantries like Loaves and Fishes and the Cortland YWCA.

This is the second year the Auxiliary revealed the amount of generated waste it handles when turning in required reporting for businesses and institutions. The report gives the SUNY Cortland campus the means to benchmark its food sustainability progress.
