Total cost for the improvements is about $26 million dollars and will include both interior and exterior renovations with an estimated completion date of January 2026. Cortland says construction began this summer and work will bring all elements of the Communications and Media Studies Department together at one location on campus.

Work will also provide a centralized location for Counseling and Wellness Services, Disability Resources and the Educational Opportunity Program.

“Despite the short-term inconveniences construction will cause, the benefits to our students and the university will be substantial,” said Professor Paul van de Veur, chair of the Communications and Media Studies Department.

Work is expected to benefit students across the SUNY Campus, according Juanuta Larrebee, director of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction.

“Improvements to Counseling and Wellness, Disability Resources, and the Educational Opportunity Program will allow staff to better serve our students during some of their most challenging and vulnerable situations,” she continued.

Cornish and Van Hoesen Hall were opened on campus back in 1962, the updates will address a lack of space and the fragmentation of services and confidentiality issues the building now faces.

“The expanded area is designed to be cohesive, meet student needs, and offer a programmatically and clinically effective space that protects students seeking help and support.” According to a release by SUNY Cortland.

During the renovation, the site will be closed. The college says a temporary asphalt walkway will be done to lead to Cornish and Van Hoesen Halls first floors from the back parking lot. Air quality testing will also be conducted during the renovation period to ensure health standards inside the building.
