Suit-Kote Begins Cape Sealing Process on Streets in City of Cortland – Work Will Extend Life of Streets
Work on cape sealing four streets in the City of Cortland began yesterday morning in an effort to extend the life of street pavements that are in fair condition to good condition. The work is a two-step process before the sealing is completed.
The four streets that are being capped are: Pearn Ave, Grant Street, Crandall Street, and Valley View Drive. The first process in cape sealing is a chip seal treatment, which is a layer of asphalt emulsion that is followed by a layer of stone.
The second process will then begin in two weeks when the layer of stone will be covered with a layer of Micro-Surfacing. Micro-Surfacing is a paving process which allows for a smooth paved finish. The four streets will be done on this process on August 15th.
Residents and businesses on the four streets have been notified by the City of Cortland of the process in advance. During the actual work, parking and road restrictions will be in place.
The main reasoning behind cap sealing in addition to extending the life of streets, is the cost savings that come with it. Maintaining a road is far more inexpensive than the cost would be to mill and then pave the streets in the future.
