Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim tragically struck and killed a man who got out of his car late last night (February 20) after a different accident that had just occurred on I-690 in Syracuse.
Syracuse.com says the accident happened just before 11:30 last night near Thompson Road, just a few hours after SU’s game against Louisville that ended around 9 p.m.
Investigators say 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez was in a car with four others when they hit a guard rail and exited their vehicle to inspect the accident.
It was then Police say the 74-year-old Boeheim accidentally struck and killed Jimenez as he stood on the side of the road. Boeheim was attempting to avoid Jiminez’ vehicle, which was in the driving lane.
Sources say Boeheim himself called 911 and was fully cooperative.
Police say all impairment tests have come back negative and that no traffic tickets have been issued.
I-690 was shutdown for several hours while crews investigated the crash.
