Structure Fire in Groton Claims Two Lives

Another structure fire in Tompkins County has claimed the lives of two individuals, Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne told X101 News in a release.

Just after 12:30 Friday morning, April 10, deputies with the Sheriff’s Office responded to the Valley View Mobile Home Park in Groton for a reported structure fire. Osborne says initial information to first responders indicated that at least one person was still inside the burning structure.

Arriving on scene, the structure was found to be fully engulfed. Deputies learned two people were still inside, Osborne said. The Groton Fire Department was already on scene when deputies arrived. Sheriff Deputies assisted firefighters in the extrication of at least one of the two persons trapped inside through a window.

However, the person extricated would ultimately die from their injuries. Osborne added the second occupant was also found deceased inside.

Agencies assisting at the scene included Groton Fire and Ambulance, Dryden Fire and Ambulance, Bangs Ambulance, McLean Fire, Ithaca Airport Crash Fire Rescue, and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

Sheriff Osborne says the incident remains under investigation. The names of the two who died have not been released at this time.
