Just before 7:30 in the evening on Wednesday, February 28th, a call came in of a reported structure fire at a barn on Blakley Road in Genoa. Responding firefighters from the Genoa Fire Department confirmed a fully involved barn fire once arriving on scene shortly after time of call.

The Genoa Fire Department said in a release, a defensive operation was necessary to battle the flames. Genoa Fire also upgraded the alarm which brought in additional fire departments and manpower to the scene.

Both hand lines and a ladder truck were used to knock down the fire. Due to the large volume of water required, the department says three fill sites were used to fill tanker trucks. Genoa Fire also said the high winds that night made the fire fast moving, but said there were no exposures to other structures.

Animals inside the barn perished as a result of the fire, according to the owner in a social media posting. The barn is considered a total loss. Over 10 departments responded to assist Genoa Fire at the scene. Additional assistance was provided by Cayuga County Emergency Management Office, Cayuga County 9-1-1, and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

All units were cleared of the scene by 1 am.

A GoFundMe has been set up to assist the family. More information may be found HERE.
