Expired: Severe weather ahead in Cortland County

A Flood Advisory is in effect until at least 10 pm for Cortland, Tompkins, Tioga and Chemung Counties.

NWS doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to the thunderstorms which could cause minor flooding in the advisory area.

Up to one inch of rain has already fallen.

Locations that could experience flooding include:

  • Ithaca
  • Newfield
  • Cayuga Heights
  • Danby
  • Caroline
  • Berkshire
  • Richford
  • Newark Valley
  • Harford
  • Candor

Motorists are reminded: “Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads.”

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles, according to the NWS.


A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Cortland, Tompkins and Tioga Counties until at least 3 pm by the National Weather Service.

Officials say a cluster of storms was located over Enfield moving east at 25 mph, bringing with it the potential of 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.

Damage can be expected from both the wind and hail to cars, roofs, siding, and trees.

The locations most likely to be impacted include:

  • Ithaca
  • Newfield
  • Cayuga Heights
  • Lansing
  • Enfield
  • Danby
  • Caroline
  • Dryden
  • Berkshire
  • Richford.

For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

If on or near any of the finger lakes this afternoon, get away from the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle.

Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

Remember, lightning can strike out to 15 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
