Residents in Cortland County will experience a near total eclipse, about 98% to be exact on Monday, April 8th. The eclipse will take place between 2:08 and 4:30 pm with maximum coverage happening around 3:23 in the afternoon.

With the eclipse coming up, now is the time to ensure you have the necessary protection if you plan to witness the eclipse with your eyes. The Cortland County Health Department is reminding everyone to not look directly at the sun during the eclipse and doing so may lead to permanent damage to your eyes.

However, there is a safe way to witness the eclipse and that is to wear solar eclipse glasses. When looking for a pair of glasses, ensure the glasses are International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified. That information may be found on the glasses.

Cortland County residents may get solar eclipse glasses throughout Cortland County. Michell Enright of Experience Cortland says their office at 42 Main Street still has pairs of glasses to be given out for free, but are in limited quantities.

There are other places though who will be offering free solar eclipse glasses. Those are:

  • Lime Hollow Nature Center
  • Cortland County Historical Society
  • Homer Hops Brewery will have a select number of glasses from April 5-7
  • Peck Memorial Library in Marathon
  • Philips Free Library will begin handing out glasses on Monday, April 1

*Each location will have limited quantities and are available while supplies last.
