Total red meat production for New York totaled 2.9 million pounds in February 2016, up 16% from the 2.5 million pounds produced in February 2015, but down 3% from January 2016, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), New York Field Office.
Commercial cattle slaughter totaled 2,500 head, up 9% from February 2015. The average live weight was up 14 pounds from the previous year at 1,196 pounds.
Commercial calf slaughter totaled 2,500 head, 39% below February 2015. The average live weight was up 29 pounds from last year at 160 pounds.
Commercial hog slaughter totaled 4,100 head, up 64 percent from February 2015. The average live weight was up 24 pounds from the previous year, at 258 pounds.
Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter totaled 4,900 head, 36 percent above February last year. The average live weight was 107 pounds, up 2 pounds from a year ago.
