State Police Warn of Rise in Smash & Grabs in Dryden & Lansing

New York State Police say they and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office are investigating several smash and grabs which occurred to several vehicles in the eastern portion of Tompkins County. A smash and grab is a crime when the suspect(s) break windows and quickly steal valuables from parked cars. The crimes usually only last seconds.

State Police are urging residents and anyone who may be visiting the area to take precautions and to report any suspicious activity.

Back on October 1st, State Police say Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle that had its front passenger side window smashed with the thieves taking numerous items, including a wallet that contained an ID and multiple credit cards. The vehicle was parked near Dryden Lake.

Another report came from a victim who reported their vehicle’s window was smashed and their vehicle rummaged through. The vehicle was in a pull off on Chaffee Road.

State Police say the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office has responded to four similar break-ins with parked and unoccupied vehicles on the same day, October 1st. The incidents were reported between 5:30pm and 8:30pm.

State Police added community awareness and quick reporting play a vital role in preventing property crimes and arresting suspects. Tips you can do to prevent yourself from being a victim include:

  • Removing all valuables from your car, especially electronics, wallets and bags.  Even if you plan to be away for a few minutes, take your belongings with you or lock them in the trunk before reaching your destination.
  • If possible, park in a well-lit area
  • Be aware and report any suspicious behavior or unfamiliar individuals in the area and your neighborhood.

Residents who live in the Dryden or Lansing area are asked to review any surveillance or ring doorbell footage for suspicious activity from October 1st between 5 and 9pm. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward and contact New York State Police at (607)561-7400.

If you see something suspicious, say something – call 911 immediately.
