State Police Release Additional Information Into Monday’s Shooting in Cortland


Further details into the shooting that took place at 171 Homer Ave. in the City of Cortland on Monday, January 29th, have been released by State Police.

State Police say Cortland County Deputies from the Civil Division of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office were attempting to serve an eviction at the residence. During the eviction attempt, deputies were confronted at the door by a male subject armed with a gun.

After the confrontation with the male subject, officers from the City of Cortland Police Department and the New York State Police responded to the scene for assistance. There were multiple unsuccessful attempts made by officers to deescalate the situation, State Police say. During an attempt, the subject fired upon officers.

Gunfire was returned to the subject by officers within the residence and the subject was struck. He was treated on scene by EMS personnel and later transported to Upstate Medical Center where he currently remains.

No officers were injured in the shootout. State Police assumed control of the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing.
