State Police Investigating Phone Scam Occurring in Cortland County

New York State Police are investigating a scam that is taking place within Cortland County, but has occurred in other areas in the past. State Police investigators in Homer say they received calls from residents of someone claiming they’re calling from a local police department and then demands money or they’ll be arrested.

State Police say the caller brings up that the victim needs to pay for a warrant or that they had “found” drugs inside a package that was shipped to the victims address. The scammer then demands payment immediately so they avoid jail.

“These phone numbers are spoofed and not really coming from the local police department. These scammers rely on fear and a sense of urgency.”

State Police said in a release.

No law enforcement department will ever call and then demand or ask for money through the phone. They will also never ask for payment through Crypto or Google Play cards or any other type of gift card.

“Do not ever wire money, send cash, use gift cards, or send cryptocurrency to someone who you don’t know. Do not give the person on the other line any financial or personal information if they call you, text you or email you.”

State Police continued.

Caller ID can be faked to give the impression that the call is coming from a legitimate source. Residents who have questions are encouraged to reach out to their local law enforcement agency by contacting them through their non-emergency number or stopping by in person.
