State Police Crack Down on Move-Over Violators on I81 During Crash Responders Safety Week

Troopers with the Troop C Traffic Incident Management Unit of the New York State Police were on I81 with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to crack-down on motorists who violate the state’s Move-Over law. In 2010, New York State implemented the law to reduce crashes involving emergency responders who are stopped along the roadway. In 2023, the law expanded to require motorists to slow down and move over for any vehicle stopped on the roadway, not just emergency or service vehicles, State Police say.

The crack down lined with Crash Responder Safety Week, Troopers on November 20th in Cortland County ended up issuing 30 tickets in total for vehicles failing to move-over. The following day, Troopers ticketed another 39 motorists on I81 in Cortland County.

State Police remind motorists, if you see a vehicle on the side of the roadway, slow down and move over a lane if it is safe to do so. If you see a vehicle trying to move over, give them space and allow them to move over safely.
