State Lifeguards Getting Pay Increases

Governor Kathy Hochul announced yesterday that lifeguards that work within New York State will see a pay increase of up to 34% to attract qualified candidates and help ensure full summer operational hours.

The large pay increase is due to a lifeguard shortage throughout the state. Starting pay rates for upstate facilities will go from $14.95 to now $20 an hour.

“All New Yorkers deserve the opportunity to safely enjoy our public beaches and pools this summer,” Governor Hochul said. “With a lifeguard shortage threatening access to swimming facilities, we are aggressively recruiting more lifeguards to ensure safe access to outdoor recreation during the summer months.”

Lifeguards that have more than two seasons of experience will also see a pay increase ranging from 5% to 30% depending on location and experience.
