The State DMV’s announced customers registering a vehicle at a DMV office will now be asked to consider joining the organ donor registry.
The question will come up on the transaction screen before a customer completes their vehicle registration. Those who accept can quickly submit an application to join the list. The move comes as the DMV works with the Department of Health and Donate Life NY on different ways to increase organ donor registration throughout the Empire State.
In New York, 84% of current organ donor registrants joined the list through the DMV, though only 46% of New York’s population is registered which lags behind other states and the national average of 62%. Donate Life says for New York to reach that national percentage, they’d need 2.7 million new organ donors added to the registry.
