The State Department of Motor Vehicles is encouraging New Yorkers to apply for a REAL or Enhanced ID based on a recent extension of the deadline to get one by the Department of Homeland Security.
Starting May 7th, 2025, every air traveler 18 and older will need a REAL ID, or a REAL ID-compliant document, such as an Enhanced License or a US passport. This will be required to both fly within the United States as well as enter certain federal buildings.
To help ease the process of getting a REAL ID or Enhanced License, the DMV has put out an online pre-screening process. This enables those who apply to submit DMV forms and proofs of ID and residency documents to the DMV prior to visiting an office. A DMV official then reviews the paperwork and makes sure the applicant has all required material before their visit, simplifying the process.
