State Department of Taxation and Finance Encouraging Residents to be Ready for Income Tax Filing Season
Tax season officially opens today, January 26th. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is encouraging all New Yorkers to be ready and learn how to file their taxes for free. The deadline to file your 2025 income taxes and pay any taxes owed is midnight on April 15th.
The Department of Taxation and Finances says many residents in New York are eligible to file their federal and state income returns at no cost. This may be done through the tax departments website via Free File. According to the department of taxation, hundreds of thousands of residents in the state take advantage of the free service each year with a savings of around $269 in tax preparation fees.
“I encourage all eligible taxpayers to take advantage of Free File – a secure, efficient, and free way to file,” New York State Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “To save on tax preparation costs, visit the New York State Tax Department website for a truly free filing experience for those who qualify.”
The service, Free File, is available in multiple languages, the tax department added, and may be found through their website, Tax.NY.gov.
