Crash kills State D.O.T. Worker On Route 17 In Tioga County

Local News

An employee for the New York Department of Transportation has died after he was struck in his parked vehicle by a tractor trailer on Route 17 in Tioga County last week.

Officials say Dennis (“Matt”) Howe, of Owego, was parked on the shoulder of Route 17 westbound in Nichols just before 10:00 Wednesday (March 13) morning when it was hit by the tractor-trailer.

Authorities said Howe was airlifted to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA, with serious injuries.

It’s now being reported by Howe’s family that he passed away on Monday (March 18).

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 37-year-old man from Ulster, Pennsylvania, received traffic tickets for moving from his lane unsafely and failing to exercise due care.

Governor Cuomo emphasized the importance of obeying the State’s “Move Over Law” and directed all state flags to be flown at half staff until Gonzalez’ interment.
