State Cracks Down on “Ghost Plates” During First-Ever Operation Plate Check – Over 3,300 Tickets Issued
Over 3,300 tickets were issued during the first-ever “Operation Place Check” that was conducted by the New York State Police, New York DMV, and local law enforcement agencies. The operation is part of a crack down on ghost cars with a forged or altered license plate.
“I want to commend the work that our members, and our law enforcement partners put into this campaign. The use of fraudulent and obstructed or defaced plates undermines public safety and we will continue our efforts to hold those who are trying to cheat the system accountable for their actions.” New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James said in a release.
The special enforcement was conducted back on April 26th through May 3rd and included various checkpoints on major highways to find vehicles with fictitious plates and fake temporary tags. New York State says the state has seen an increase in the use of fraudulent license plates.
In Homer, law enforcement was set-up on the I81 connector off of Route 281 checking vehicles and seeing if there were any with fake and fraudulent, peeling, or obstructed license plates. According to the State Police, several vehicles were stopped with some being towed.
The state-wide operation also resulted in the recovery of 14 stolen vehicles, 83 tickets issued for drivers with suspended registration.
