State Comptroller Says Toll Hikes Should Be Last Resort for Thruway

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s blowing the whistle on a plan by the State Thruway Authority to gradually implement system-wide toll increases.

The proposed hikes would occur January 1st, 2024 and again on January 1st, 2027. It would also expand the difference in rates between New York-issued E-ZPass users and all others.

A new report from DiNapoli finds concerns with the endeavor, and is instead urging the Thruway Authority to first improve their operations and maximize non-toll revenues. Additionally, his office reviewed the proposal as well as a decade of the Thruway’s finances and found gaps in information necessary to properly evaluate that proposal.

DiNapoli says “ (The Thruway) should identify and put in place all possible cost-savings and alternative revenue actions to minimize costs to drivers. Raising tolls should be the last option, and the Thruway has more work to do”.
