State Comptroller Says Local Sales Tax Collections in NYS On the Rise

A new report released by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has found New York State local government sales tax collections were on the rise last year, including 4.4% in Cortland County.


Overall sales tax collection figures in the Empire State swelled to $22.1 billion, up 12.7% compared to 2021’s numbers due to strong sales statewide. The rate of inflation also helped maintain this steady growth as the rising price of goods compensated for falling consumer demand for products during this time period.

Several other factors contributed to the continued growth of sales taxes. This includes state employment growing 3.1%, and modest growth in average hourly earnings across New York
