Anglers can rejoice as the state has announced this weekend, June 29th and 30th, will be a free fishing weekend throughout the state. During the free fishing weekend, a fishing license requirement is waived for freshwater fishing in New York State waters.

“Summer break is almost here, and New York’s free fishing days provide the perfect opportunity for anyone eager to try fishing for the first time. With a wide variety of freshwater settings and sportfish species, anglers have a wide range of fishing experiences to choose from.”

said New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar.

The free fishing day program started back in 1991 in an effort to provide those who don’t fish an opportunity to try the activity at no cost. Both New York residents and non-residents are allowed to fish for free. Participants though are reminded that all other fishing regulations are still in effect.
