Spectrum Warning Customers of Latest Scams Including a Discount Scam
Spectrum is warning their customers of two scams that have been reported to the company recently. One scam involves a bill payment discount offer and the second is a romance scam.
The company says their customers have received offers of a bill payment discount, with some offering 40% off their Spectrum bill if they use gift cards or credit cards. The company says this is a scam and is not being offered by the company.
The second scam Spectrum says is taking place is a romance scam. The scam is when the scammer creates a fake online identity to gain trust and then asks for personal information including their social security number, bank account, and other details.
Scammers typically contact their would-be victims through text and/or calling and leaving a voicemail posing a Spectrum and stating they have applied a discount to your bill. The scammer will then direct you to call a phone number in order to keep the discount offer.
“Once you call that number, you’ll be greeted by someone posing as a live Spectrum representative, who will ask you for the mobile phone number that received the text or call, plus your account information.”
According to Spectrum.
Afterwards, the scammer themselves contacts Spectrum Customer Care posing as you and learns what your account balance is. The scammer then says in order to apply the “discount” a gift card must be purchased at any convenience store. If the would-be victim agrees to purchasing the gift card, they will then receive a text on how to provide the gift card information to a “third-party” vendor. After the information is provided, the scammer drains the cash amount from the card and the victim is out of whatever amount they put on the gift card.
More information on how to avoid scammers is provided online through Spectrum’s website found HERE.
