An interruption in the flow of traffic this morning on Port Watson, Tompkins and Owego Streets, but police were on it.
A group of officers in fact, participating in the annual Special Olympics Torch Run from the Port Watson Street Bridge to Beaudry Park.
Cortland Police officer Joe Peters helped to organize the turnout, and offered a pep talk prior to the start. “The athletes and their families don’t pay for things to compete,” said Peters. “All the money we raise goes to them, so it’s really important that we do this.”
Cassandra Rucker of the Special Olympics said, “It’s been really overwhelming to watch our family grow. The number of officers in law enforcement involved in supporting our athletes and the comradery between the two. The athletes adopt the law enforcement and law enforcement adopt the athletes, and they really bond well together.”
