Update: The Cortland County Legislature’s Solid Waste Committee met Thursday afternoon and approved a new contract with Casella Recycling.
That’s the company that ran the county recycling center until the end of 2016, when the county ended the deal.
The county briefly explored staffing the center itself, but it became clear that savings would be minimal.
Casella lowered what it would charge the county in its new proposal, driven by commodities market prices and lower tipping fees at the Ontario County landfill, where the recycling is gathered.
2017 recycling costs could be $15-20,000 lower than the 2016 cost, according to estimates provided by the committee.
