The permanent protection of 86 acres in the Skaneateles Lake Watershed through a conservation easement has been announced by the State DEC and the Finger Lakes Land Trust.
The easement was supported via a $1.69 million award handed out to the Land Trust by the DEC’s Water Quality Improvement Project Program to support four source water protection endeavors. The now-protected land will safeguard two streams and an environmental protection zone that prevents potential contaminants from entering Skaneateles Lake, helping to keep the drinking water for Syracuse and neighboring communities safe.
Conservation easements are voluntary legal agreements that permanently limit land use in order to protect its conservation value.
