Central New York woke up to sad news from the north side of Syracuse Friday.
It appears that six people in one family are dead following a fire on Martin Street.
Neighbors report hearing an explosion at about 3:50 am, then several people called 911 reporting the fire.
Fire Chief Paul Linnertz says when his first crews arrived, they tried entering through the front door, but the porch roof came down on them.
Firefighters continued to try to get inside, using ladders on every side of the home, but flames were too much.
Seven of the eight people who lived at that Martin Street home were asleep and only one escaped.
Neighbors say it was the mother, who was taken to the hospital.
The chief told reporters he believes all the victims are from one family.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner was at the scene early this morning.
Investigators are working to see if they can determine what caused the fire.
