Sheriff’s Office Warns of Another Scam Phone Call
The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is once again warning of another scam phone call happening in the Cortland area. The Sheriff’s Office says several residents have received a phone call of someone who identified themselves as a member of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Mark Helms says the Sheriff’s Office will never call someone to solicit a payment from residents in lieu of warrants, prosecution, or an arrest. Residents are reminded to never provide private information to anyone over the phone unless you can confirm the call is from a legitimate source. You should also never provide gift card or prepaid credit card information to someone over the form; these forms of “payment” would never be accepted to post bail, pay fines, or “dismiss” charges, the Sheriff’s Office added.
Anyone who has received a phone call like this is asked to hang-up and to report it to the Sheriff’s Office by calling at (607) 753-3311.
