It is that time of year where the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that fireworks are still illegal in the state and those caught are subjected to fines.
A local law was passed in 2015 by the legislature to allow the sale and use of sparkling devices on or between June 1st and July 5th, and between December 26th and January 2nd each year. The type of devices allowed include: sparkling devices, cylindrical fountain, cone fountain, and a wooden sparkler/dipped stick.
All the devices do not rise into the air and do not fire a projectile or explode. Businesses selling these items though must be licensed through the state’s Office of Fire Prevention and Control or another agency designated by the state.
