This week is National Safe Boating Week through the 24th, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office says. The safe boating week officially kicks off the 2024 Safe Boating Campaign, which will promote the value of voluntary, consistent life jacket wear by recreational boaters.

Drowning is the cause of death in 4 out of every 5 recreational boating fatalities in 2022, according to data by the United States Coast Guard. Of those drowning deaths, 75% were not wearing a life jacket.

Life jackets available nowadays are more comfortable, lightweight and stylish than those of the past. Options also include inflatable life jackets, which offer greater mobility and flexibility for activities such as boating, fishing, paddling or hunting. The inflatable jackets are also much cooler to wear during warm days.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to visit SafeBoatingCampaign.com to follow their Facebook page throughout the week where daily tips for boaters will be posted.
