One person died in an early morning accident Sunday on 81 North just south of the Homer exit (12).

Cortland County Sheriff’s deputies were called at about 2:30.

Captain Robert Derksen says deputies found a 2008 Kia Optima had struck guide rails on both sides of the road before coming to rest on the pavement.

The four people inside got out, but one was hit by a 2015 Mustang driven by Andrew Roy, 29, of Willow Spring, North Carolina and was killed.

The victim was identified as Aaron Rosario, 22, of Syracuse.

The others in both cars were checked by medics on scene. Their names were not released by police.

The interstate was closed for about 9.5 hours until just after noon for the investigation and accident reconstruction.

The Sheriff’s office was assisted by State Police, Homer Police, Cortland Police, the Homer Fire Department, Cortland Fire Department, TLC Ambulance and NYSDOT.
