Sheriff Warns of Another Gift Card Scam

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is warning the Cortland community of another scam going around where the scammer is demanding the purchase of gift cards.

Complaints have come into the Sheriff’s Office by local businesses who are receiving phone calls by someone identifying themselves as the company’s manager or higher. The scammer then indicates that the business has recently been getting counterfeit money and then directs the employee to bring all the money in the register to another store and purchase gift cards.

The scammer then directs the employee to read off the numbers of the gift card to them over the phone, which lets the scammer take the money from the business.

The Sheriff’s Office says if anyone receives a call like this, to hang up and contact a known supervisor followed by contacting law enforcement.

If payment requested is via a gift card, the Sheriff’s Office says it is very likely to be a scam.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind all citizens of the county that “if you see something unusual, say something” report the incident immediately by calling either 9-1-1 or 607-753-3311.
