Cortland County Sheriff Mark Helms announced on Friday (January 18) that he plans to run for a second term.
Helms has been Sheriff since 2016 and was Homer Chief of Police for three years before that.
He also had a lengthy career as an Officer with the Cortland Sheriffs Department, beginning part-time immediately after graduating from the Police Academy in 1990. Helms then made full-time in 1994.
In 2009, Helms graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, which consisted of ten weeks of leadership and specialized training.
