Just before 3 o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, January 15th, officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office responded to Kinney Drugs on Route 281 for a shoplifting complaint that was taking place in the store.
As officers were responding to the store, they learned the suspect had fled the scene and was headed towards the City of Cortland via the railroad tracks. Officers were able to locate him and arrest him. The suspect in question was identified as 37 year old Michael P. Ahearn, who is listed as homeless. The Sheriff’s Office also says Ahearn provided a false identification to them.
Once Ahearn’s identification was confirmed to be correct, it was found he had active warrants from both the Sheriff’s Office and the City of Cortland Police Department. As he was being taken into custody, officers found Ahearn to be in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
He was charged with Petit Larceny, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the 2md, and False Personation. Ahearn was transported to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office where he was arraigned on his outstanding warrant through the centralized arraignment process and was released; he was also issued appearance tickets for his new charges.
