Sheriff and City Police Warn of Ongoing Scam Phone Calls
Both the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Cortland Police Department are warning residents of another ongoing scam phone call where the caller is posing as a member of law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office says the scammer then demands payment to them for a warrant cancellation, bail, bond, fines, etc. The scammer then says payment may be done via a gift card or another electronic form of payment.
No real law enforcement agency will ever ask for payment via gift cards or other electric forms. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from a local law enforcement agency or any other call that seems suspicious with them requesting a payment from you, hang-up and call your local law enforcement agency to report.
