The National Weather Service in Binghamton today (June 26) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Northern Cortland County until 3:00 p.m., along with Southwestern Madison County, Southeastern Cayuga County, Southeastern Onondaga County and Northwestern Chenango County.
A severe thunderstorm was located over Sempronius, 10 miles northwest of Cortland, moving east at 25 mph. Reports of 60 mph wind gusts and penny size hail have come in via radar.
The Weather Service says we can expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees in locations including Homer, Preble, Scott, Truxton, Cuyler, Sempronius, Tully, Pharsalia, Deruyter and Taylor.
“For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Hail and damaging winds and continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately.
Lightning is one of nature`s leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.”
