Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has recognized the Seven Valleys Health Coalition (SVHC) with the 2023 Health Equity Innovation Award for the organization’s extension of support beyond both prenatal labor and birth care to now the postpartum period.
SVHC will rollout a new postpartum doula pilot project within the county. It is a collaborative effort between SVHC and the Cayuga Community Health Network, Herkimer County Health Department, and the Madison County Rural Health Council.
The purpose of the doula pilot project is to increase the doula-attended births for low income pregnant individuals, decrease adverse maternal/child health outcomes, develop community partnerships with local providers and programs that serve pregnant individuals, and increase awareness on the benefits of a doula-attended birth.
A birth doula is someone who is a non-medical trained professional that will provide physical, emotional, and informational support to a pregnant individual before, during, and shortly after childbirth. The goal of a birth doula is to ensure the mother achieves the healthiest and most satisfying experience possible.
