SUNY Cortland has announced that Seussical will be coming down later this week and into next week at the Dowd Fine Arts Center on the Cortland Campus.
“The universally recognizable characters from the Dr. Seuss stories appeal to all audiences, young, old and especially young-at-heart,” said Kevin Halpin, professor of performing arts and director and choreographer of the show, which includes Seuss creations ranging from Horton the Elephant to the Cat in the Hat.
The show begins this Friday, February 17th and will run through next Sunday, February 26th. The musical is based on the famous work by author and writer Theodor Seuss Geisel aka Dr. Seuss. Music by Stephen Flaherty with the script by Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and originally opened back in 2000 on Broadway.
“This cast has been incredibly committed and hard-working throughout the process,” Director Kevin Halpin said. “What I find most rewarding is when I see these young artists completely submerse themselves in the character they are playing onstage and begin to behave as that character in rehearsals, discovering ways of expressing the life of the character and telling our story as clearly as possible to an audience.”
Director Kevin Halpin has directed over 30 shows at SUNY Cortland. Halpin also noted the musical is a different type of production than usual the Performing Arts Department has done in a while.
