Legislation was recently advanced by Senator Lea Webb and State Senate Democrats to improve rail safety.
The legislation seeks to reduce the risks of train derailments and enhance the maintenance and safety procedures of freight trains traveling within New York State. Items in the package include heat safety gauges on freight rail tracks, two-person train crew requirement, limiting train length and comprehensive safety inspection.
In a statement, Senator Webb said that communities desire and deserve greater transparency regarding freight rail safety, especially in the aftermath of the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment.
