US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has thrown her support behind national legislation aimed at making it easier for Americans to register to vote and know their voter registration status.
The Same Day Registration Act would require polling locations across the country to have same-day registration during both early voting and on Election Day. While the SAVE VOTERS Act would prevent states from removing voters from their rolls unless they have clear proof of voter ineligibility. It would also establish notification requirements once a voter is removed.
“As states continue to create new barriers to the ballot box, Congress needs to do much more to protect disenfranchised voters and their sacred right to vote. These two pieces of legislation would take much-needed steps to strengthen the integrity of elections and ensure our voting is equal, fair and accessible to all Americans, said Senator Gillibrand.
Both pieces of legislation have widespread Democratic support in the Senate.
