Amidst 2023 Farm Bill negotiations, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has announced her priorities in support of New York’s dairy farmers.
Gillibrand will reintroduce her bipartisan Dairy Pricing Opportunity Act, which would allow dairy farmers to be key players in reviewing proposals to change Class I milk pricing. This would be done by requiring the US Department of Agriculture to hold national hearings to review Federal Milk Marketing Orders.
The current milk pricing system is considered one of the most complicated and out-of-date economic systems in the country.
Gillibrand also announced a joint letter with Senator Chuck Schumer pushing Canada to uphold its dairy trade obligations as part of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which has caused issues for America’s dairy producers.
